Sahara Bug Rally

Join the Sahara Rally drive of a lifetime – in a Volkswagen Beetle!

13th – 29th March 2020

There are a few places left to join one of 2020’s most exciting automotive adventures, driving the original Dakar Rally route across the Sahara Desert in a Volkswagen Beetle!

Join teams from around the UK for the adventure holiday of a lifetime. Setting off from Plymouth, Devon in your £300 Beetle you and your teammate/s will tackle hundreds of miles of sand, rock and gravel through Morocco.

Each team of up to 4 drivers must find and prepare their own Volkswagen Beetle, old shape or new. If a new shape model, it should ideally be fitted with the 1.9 diesel engine or 2.0 petrol version, but Driven to Extremes will advise on how to source and prepare a suitable vehicle. We can also offer a turn-key service where suitable cars are sourced and prepared ready for the desert, contact Mac for more details.

Despite its cheeky demeanour, the Beetle has proven itself a highly capable car to tackle such challenges, reliable, robust and easy to repair in the middle of nowhere.

The Sahara Bug Rally is an adventurous expedition that requires endurance, stamina and resilience when the going gets tough. Whilst battling through arduous terrain in such a challenging and extreme environment, common issues include punctured tyres, holed engine sumps, damaged exhausts and endless vehicle recoveries from soft sand. But with all teams pulling together when needed, no one is left stranded.

Of course, with any used car costing £300 there are always going to be issues, so your team is backed up by a professional support crew in expedition equipped 4×4’s who are on hand to cover any eventualities.

Delivered by expedition specialists Max Adventure, we have been operating in extreme environments for over 25 years, in temperatures from -60 to +50 degrees Celsius and at altitudes up to 8,850 meters.

We have worked alongside Sir Ranulph Fiennes and Hollywood actor Tom Hardy in places as far-flung as Siberia, the North Pole and Mt Everest.

This challenging event raises funds to support military and emergency services veterans who are suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

Originally conceived as a support programme to help ex-service personnel with their recovery by taking them on confidence-building vehicle adventures, next year’s Sahara Bug Rally has been opened up to the public, allowing adventurers from all walks of life to take part.

In 1945, following World War 2, the British Army helped Volkswagen get back on their feet by restarting Beetle production, and in doing so they saved the company from certain ruin.

In 2020, to mark the 75th anniversary of this historic event, it is time for the Beetle to return the favour and help those military veterans that are suffering from PTSD.

Entering the ‘Sahara Bug Rally’ costs just £745 per person and £495 per car. This cost includes return ferry from Spain to Morocco, all accommodation in Morocco, branded team shirts and vehicle graphics. Each team is also required to raise a minimum of £500 for Driven to Extremes in order to help further veterans.

The total adventure from the UK is 17 days, but teams are able to join us in Gibraltar should they wish to take a more leisurely drive through Europe.
